A New House
I found a house! Peace Corps has approved it and the lease has been signed! But don’t worry, it wasn’t a simple process. I’ll spare you the details because I know that you have other things to do this week than read about my house hunting, but don’t worry, the experience has raised my patience level yet another notch.
It is in a nice part of town, centrally located near the main post office, the bank and a few ‘supermarkets’. It is kind of like a row house, built out of concrete and has three stories. But not three stories like we are accustomed to. Upon entering the front door, you are immediately faced with a stairwell. This takes you to the second floor, where the vestibule connects you to the nice-sized kitchen, the bedroom, a large salon and a small salon. Winding up the stairs to the third floor, the open-aired terrace connects you to the Turkish-toilette room, the bathroom with tub included, and an additional salon-type room. The house has electricity and running water and even has a hot water heater! The kitchen comes with a lovely ventilator, the vestibule has a roof that can be opened from the terrace and the large salon has an air conditioner and a ceiling fan. (I’m not sure if the air conditioner works, however.)
I’m scheduled to get the keys on Christmas and then I’ll have to buy, buy, buy everything I need because the apartment is empty. Don’t worry, Peace Corps has provided us with a settling-in allowance but any further donations are generously accepted and greatly appreciated.
So what else has been going on in lovely Béni Mellal? Not much, honestly.
Thank you to all of you who sent loverly birthday wishes, card and gifts. (It was December 5th, don’t forget next year and it’s still not too late for this year.) I now have a floppy disc drive, so I will be posting some pictures very soon, inshallah.
I would like to take the time to give a shout-out to one special lady. It has come to my attention that Betsy Strauss is a diehard fan of joshuahaynes.com. She checks the site relentlessly to see what new shananigans I’m up to. Betsy, wherever you are, may all your dreams come true and may you keep reaching for the stars.
On that note, I bid you adieu and and remember: a deaf bat is a dead bat.
